Opponauts,

What are your thoughts on smoked license plate covers? I have front and back plates (Thanks Obama!), but I hate the brightness of them. I'd like to cover them as pictured (minus the frame..), but I also don't want more tickets. Any of you have experience with these?

Cop magnet level 10 for me. I avoid things that cops use as excuses to pull me over- I'm hoping by not having any of those type items I can drive my 4->9 (depending on the situation) mph over the limit and not get bothered, therefore saving time.

That being said, front plates are stoopid and my state just like your (HI NEIGHBOR!) state requires them. I usually end up trying to find a way to make it at least look like they belong but on modern cars it' rough.

It's illegal here in CA, and I assume in most of the 49 other states. They will pull you over and give you a fix it ticket, it's a pain in the ass.

It makes you look like a thug trying to get away with shit. Take the smoke plate off.

If I were a cop, I'd target you and pull you over every time I saw a smoked plate.

That's about my thoughts; also, this is the first place I've lived that requires a front plate. Maximum irritation.

I think it's the same as tinted windows, where you can only have it so dark before it's illegal. I'd recommend just going without.

just go front plate-less. your less likely to be bothered by the police and you can always just claim it fell off.

Speaking from just a civilian point of view, I think these should be illegal on rear license plates . License plates are required for identification purposes and every time I see someone with these I have to wonder why they're trying to obscure their plate numbers. I've seen old and crazed-over ones that make the plate barely visible. IDGAF about front plate covers.

There was an H2 that a customer used to bring by my job that had covers with some sort of magnifying coating on them so they'd obscure the plates even more, making them completely un-readable

True. That said, I am definitely getting tint done soon; not limo-level or mirrored shit, but dark enough to keep it a bit cooler.

Hah, thanks.

Side note: I am a white male more likely to be mistaken for a hipster than a thug. I wear TOMS on occasion, for example.

I did that with my Jeep for a few months, until a friend got a $90 fix-it ticket. Decided to wire-tie the plate over my bumper so I wouldn't have to drill.

Seriously. (part of my job involved writing down plate numbers)

Once the cop pulls you over and sees this, you'll be good then. Lol
